Our club has always thought that our pool must be the best 5 lane pool in the country. Its fast to swim in, clean, spacious, neat and tidy, has a very flash and quite large viewing gallery with shiny green flipping seats. Has a reliable electronic system by Omega too.

It is the only 5 lane pool I know that is allowed to host Speedo League galas and hold designated meets.

You can't see the learner pool which could be used as a swimdown pool or the viewing/seating gallery on the left. It looks better than that when you're there.

Obviously doesn't get over used either, as I notice from the photo you only use 2 of the 5 lanes?

There is this gorgeous 5 lane pool on the Isle of Wight in Sandown. Worth a visit.

why do they build 5 lane pool? shorly it would not cost much more to put in a 6th lane. and if you scraped the learner pool which never get used it would be cheaper?
What I mean by scraping the learner pool is the learns can learn in the main pool like I did when I was a kid?

What's wrong with a 5 lane pool anyhow? We have quite a few 5 lane pools up here and they are used for everything that 6 lane pools are (except for being smaller obviously); they have to be because we don't have very many 6 lane pools. We hold two of our district meets in 5 lane pools and they do the job just fine.

Still haven't explained yourself though.

Could it be that the pool was originally 4 lane and they were made smaller to increase the number to 5, or could it be that the pool was a narrow 6 lane pool and they were reduced in number to make the lanes wider?

This now poses me with the question, "Where was the idea that 6, 8 or 10 was a good number of lanes to have"? What is wrong with 5? Why not 20?

Go to the Heights leisure centre in Sandown and cure your lack of 5 lane swimming.

On the subject of strange shaped pools Wycombe never quite looks right to me! 6 lane 50m with an extra bit on one side of the deep end.

And I'm not sure what the deal is with the pool at Barnstaple as the top diving board (5m I think) is about 3ft from the ceiling! Did it used to be an open air pool or is the population of north Devon particularly small! lol

I was at Exeter university 1977-81 and I'm sure there was an old 5 lane 33 1/3 yard pool there. Certainly my fav ever pool as I did my first sub 50 second 100 yards there in about 1977. (oh happy days)

I see you're a Devon (guy/girl - sorry doesn't say) - is it still there ?

Sale Leisure Centre might have the worse 5 lane pool. It's an old fashioned Victorian design. It's 25 YARDS long. It has unique lane markings. There are two continuous lines down the length of the pool that divide the pool into 3 equal size sections. The markings across the pool are again continuous lines and there are 3 at each end at about 1 YARDS , 3 YARDS and 5 YARDS from the end. Someone decided to put lane rope fixings in to make it a 5 lane pool. Each lane is about 5 feet wide. I'll measure it some day. Luckily Sale leisure centre also has a proper 6 lane 25 metre pool. We only have to use the 5 lane pool once a month, sometimes we don't put lane ropes in and use it as a 3 lane pool.

Altrincham Leisure centre also has a purpose built 5 lane pool, built in 1970's. I have never been in it to swim. Altrincham and Sale are about 2 miles apart and are both part of Trafford. What have Trafford got about 5 lane pools
