View Full Version : No short course qualification for Long Course Nationals?

I received an e-mail at the weekend from someone regarding the proposed (???) change to the qualifying system for National Long Course championships.

Apparently (and when I've spoken to the chap concerned I'll try and publish his e-mail in full) you will not be able to qualify for Long Course National Championships by swimming in a short course event.

Effectively, that means the end of designated open meets (like our very own Barracudas Open) unless you are lucky enough to train and compete in a long course pool - that ain't many of us!!

I think you're all pretty aware of the problems this might cause. I know clubs like ours will effectively be prevented from competing at National Championships - the cost of travelling to compete Long Course would probably finish the club off.

Is this just a horrible rumour (my source suggested this came from someone quite high-up in the ASA!) or could this really be happening?

I sincerely hope it is just a bad rumour.

We're lucky in that we have two long course pools in our county (Sheffield and Leeds), but even so I think it's a little unnecessary and far too restrictive.

What is the point?

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago, and I beleive it will come in to affect as soon as the World Champs Trials in April, It's unfortunate I know, but it'll stop the 'false entries.' You know who I mean those people that are quick short course but some how can't pull it off in the 50m pools.

In N+D we haven't got a 50m pool either so we have to travel to compete. I haven't swam lon since the Olympic Trials! http://www.swimclub.co.uk/ubb/mad.gif

I've Just been on britishswimming.org and the meet information for April confirms the rumours!!!

Looking at www.britishswimming.org (http://www.britishswimming.org) this applies for the open category at the moment not for the age group nationals where converted 25m times will be accepted this year.

Appears that 25m time swill also be accepted for the English l/c champs in July - at least 25m times are given on the qualifying times list

Maybe, but orginally 25m times were published for the Trails in April as well.
