Plymouth City Council have confirmed that the city will have completed the build of a 50m pool by 2010. Building work on Plymouth's proposed ‘Life Centre’ leisure complex will begin in the next financial year, the city council's leader has pledged. Councillor Tudor Evans said the ambitious project to create Olympic-standard facilities at Central Park would be completed by 2010
On Monday March 5th, the council agreed to commit £26.4million towards the centre, bringing total spending on capital projects for the city over the next three years to £316million. The move comes seven months after Lottery chiefs turned down a £25million council bid toward the cost of the complex.
Councillor Evans said: “We have listened to the 10,000 people who signed the petition saying they wanted world-class sporting facilities in Plymouth. We have listened to those who say that Plymouth should no longer make do with 33.5 metre swimming pools.
No longer will we adopt the patch-and-mend policy of our predecessors. The people of Plymouth deserve better and we have developed proposals that will deliver that world-class facility. We know the people of Plymouth want these facilities and we now have a deliverable plan. We will be investing £26million to deliver this and it is proposed that this scheme goes out for procurement as quickly as possible.”
The Life Centre will include:
- A wet sports centre comprising an Olympic-standard 50-metre swimming pool and diving pool, a children's leisure pool, diver training facilities, changing rooms and offices
- A multi-purpose dry sports hall with seating for 1000 spectators
- A leisure ice rink to replace that at the Pavilions and capable of extension in the future
- A martial arts dojo with associated teaching space
- A fitness suite equipped with 100 fitness stations
- A spa with treatment areas, sauna, steam room and associated spaces
- A reception area and administrative offices
- A health centre including both well man and well woman clinics

Hopefully, there is a new 50m Olympic sized Pool coming to Royal Berkshire, this is being put financed by a private backer, and the proposed site is somewhere between Royal Windsor & Maidenhead. We are all getting very excited!!!

Great for Plymouth, obviously a place with real civic pride and ambition.

Where do i apply?
I might ask for a 50 meter pool for corringham.
Perhaps the lottery will fund it. If manchester united can get 30 g's of lotto dosh for a gym, then its got to be worth a stab. Maybe the country has run out of applications from the needy. Get in quick people.
I bet one of the bigwigs applied for a joke and ended up laughing his knickers off when it came through.

Is it true that there is a real danger that the Plymouth Life Centre is not now going to happen? I heard some people talking about it at the PL Open this weekend.
It would be a crying shame if it was shelved.

I believe it's in Central Park :flash:
It was test filled back in February and tiled in May, and I think is still scheduled to open to the public in December

On the local web site (http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/homepage/leisureandtourism/sportandrecreation/swimmingpools/indoorswimmingpools/centralparkleisurepool.htm). It states as a 6 lane 33.3m pool.
Perhaps it is in the School Pool?

Its at the Life Centre in Central Park. I think it was built as a replacement for the 33.3m pool

Cheers, guess that the Plymouth Council needs to improve its own site.
