Plymouth City Council have confirmed that the city will have completed the build of a 50m pool by 2010. Building work on Plymouth's proposed ‘Life Centre’ leisure complex will begin in the next financial year, the city council's leader has pledged. Councillor Tudor Evans said the ambitious project to create Olympic-standard facilities at Central Park would be completed by 2010
On Monday March 5th, the council agreed to commit £26.4million towards the centre, bringing total spending on capital projects for the city over the next three years to £316million. The move comes seven months after Lottery chiefs turned down a £25million council bid toward the cost of the complex.
Councillor Evans said: “We have listened to the 10,000 people who signed the petition saying they wanted world-class sporting facilities in Plymouth. We have listened to those who say that Plymouth should no longer make do with 33.5 metre swimming pools.
No longer will we adopt the patch-and-mend policy of our predecessors. The people of Plymouth deserve better and we have developed proposals that will deliver that world-class facility. We know the people of Plymouth want these facilities and we now have a deliverable plan. We will be investing £26million to deliver this and it is proposed that this scheme goes out for procurement as quickly as possible.”
The Life Centre will include:
- A wet sports centre comprising an Olympic-standard 50-metre swimming pool and diving pool, a children's leisure pool, diver training facilities, changing rooms and offices
- A multi-purpose dry sports hall with seating for 1000 spectators
- A leisure ice rink to replace that at the Pavilions and capable of extension in the future
- A martial arts dojo with associated teaching space
- A fitness suite equipped with 100 fitness stations
- A spa with treatment areas, sauna, steam room and associated spaces
- A reception area and administrative offices
- A health centre including both well man and well woman clinics
