Any of you going to the Karlyn Pipes-Nielsen swim clinic at St Pauls School, London on Sunday?

See you there.

(Not swimming - just going along to be sociable!)

I'm sure StevieK & Dunc are going, or is it St Paul's Cathedral I always get the 2 mixed up.

I'm not going, but I did buy her Go Swim Freestyle DVD the other day, and have to say I was quite disappointed with it. Karlyn is obviously an amazing swimmer to do the times she does at her age, but my personal view is that her technique isn't up there with Kaitlin Sandeno's on the All Strokes DVD, and I also think some of the advice is likely to cause a lot of confusion due to contradicting advice that may have been received elsewhere.

For example, the advice that the hand entry should be slightly outside the shoulder line. From other sources I've already had contradictory advice, saying either the entry should be in line with the shoulder, or that it should be between the shoulder line and centre line. So the DVD just gave me a third viewpoint, how am I supposed to know who is right and who is wrong?

The most damning thing was that the commentary was warning that if you don't use this wide arm pull technique, you'll end up zigzagging down the pool. But when we see Karlyn in the video from the front, she can be seen to be zigzagging down the pool. Okay, it's a fairly minor amount of zigzag, certainly not a Rebecca Cooke amount of zigzag, but Kaitlin Sandeno goes down the pool perfectly straight like an arrow, and she does it with a more conventional hand entry.

I'd heard about this wide hand entry that the advocates. It will be interesting to see what she says about it. I've tried it and it doesn't feel right to me though.

I'll be there for the second session Stevie_k.

I can't believe 3 of my favourite swimmers will be all together without me, NVF, Spidey, Ian Thorpe & obviously my son being the others. Oh and I'm keeping a very close eye on Ed Denton one of our ex-swimmers now at Florida uni (and doing very well), and a 13 year old young man at Bracknell who in my mind is definitely one for the future. Sorry I went a bit off track there!!!

I met her in Stanford, and although I cannot pass judgement on her technical ability, I found her to be a nice woman - and no, I'm not going.

Aloha my swimmer friends,

Just thought I would jump in and say hello. I arrive in the UK on Friday night and I am looking forward to meeting some of you on Sunday at the clinics. I am VERY excited!

As for some of the comments...keep them coming! The more you explore, the better you can get.

After all, swimming is not a one size-fits-all sport so it really is up to YOU to decide what method (or combination thereof) that works best for you. Why stop at THREE suggestions...go for ten and experiment with them all.

In my clinics and in the DVD I suggest a "slightly wider than shoulder hand placement" because when you reach or "shift" your shoulder forward, there is naturally occurring rotation that draws your arm toward the centerline. Hence "slightly wider" ends up being just off the shoulder, unless you over-rotate; then you are back in the middle.

As for MY zig zag, this is an editing mistake and I hope it will be changed in the next version of the DVD. If you watch the very first clip of the section entitled "Don't Cross the Centerline" my stroke looks weird and jerky (but still wide). In this clip I am purposely over-rotating my HIPS to show that if you are wide enough, you can apply a great deal of power from the core and hips and not flip over.

Other than that small mistake (and one where Glenn is taking about a straight wrist and MY wrist on the recovery is bent...oh and the surfbaord leash not around my ankle and...), I think it is a well-done production and I am very proud of the work.

The point here is; Kaitlyn, Eric, Janet Evans, Inky, Ian are all great swimmers but not one of them swims with exactly the same stroke. What works for them, may not work for you...so try it ALL out and see what feels best for YOU.

See you Sunday!

Karlyn

PS What is the weather like? I will be going for a last minute OCEAN swim before jumping on the plane. Of course, all of you are welcome to come to a clinic or camp in Hawaii anytime!

What a choice? A Sunday afternoon with Duncan in attendance, or a holiday in Hawaii with you?

That's a difficult decision to make! - but I'll see you on Sunday. That'll be a start.

Just got back from the clinic.

I really liked it, thought it was great and she was lovely.

All made lots of sense to me, and the swimming style felt very nice and smooth. Very different to the way i swim, with narrow entry and head up quite high.

I adapted quite quickly and i think it felt great, powerfull and smooth. Cant wait for tomorrow to give it a longer try out. Ill be most interested to see how it feels and times on a short sprint. I can see it would be excellent on long swims. For sprints i normally try and literally lift my shoulders out the water, because thats how my mate taught me to sprint and hes very quick with this method.

An enjoyable day, I got loads out of it.

Oddly enough she was getting us to relax and hunch our shoulders forward, which i did. She then pointed out that i looked like the hulk. LOL

I will be looking forward to watching karylin compete at sussex, as well as competing myself.

Stevie - I was going to mention the same after meeting you at Bracknell, but thought you may take it the wrong way.

Well it depends on how i look like the hulk.

Moody, ugly as sin, scary, scruffy or lean musclular and strong.

I dont think i fall into either category. But its better than being called a pink panted poofter so ill take it :)

I saw Stevie_k at the weekend, Bully. He was swimming OK but I had difficulty recognising him without his pink trunks. After your ribbing he probably won't wear them again. Maybe he's in denial?

Well, after swimming with karylins wide entry style, and putting together a few of the other tips, i felt like i was swimming very nicely at the session, as we all were. Now im home, i took it out for a few lengths this morning, and also to club. But the time i was at club i was really starting to feel it. Someone actually had to let me through tonight...this has never ever happened!!!!

If i entered too narrow, i seemed to miss the 'sweet spot'.

I think there was a couple reasons for this increase in speed. Karylins technique and Bullys sessions. They have been a little longer and tougher than i set myself and my fitness has started to improve.

Thanks Bully, i really appreciate the help mate.

And i have to say i thought Karylins session was absolutely awesome and i am completely converted.

Have to agree with you. I bought the dvd back in August and adapted to that style. My stroke feels much more comfortable and stronger. One problem that has cropped up, I started to shorten a bit at the exit which my coach barked at me a little.
All in all much more improved stroke. I am now swimming as fast as I was ten years ago.

could someone describe in detail what she told y'all to do, curious as to if it's what i teach or not?

Stevie_k
20-03-2007, 03:23 PM
I have the worst memory on earth jon, and very little technical knowhow.

Bad combination for relaying info.

But she advocates a wide entry. V shaped. Aim for the corners type stroke. Not so big on the S shape. In some respects like TI, dragging body past arm.

I dont want to say too much in case i get sued.

If you want to see results of her Long Course Competition, visit this site http://www.southeastswimming.org/masters/2007/longcourse/ Thanks to Chris Lamb. The 800m Free time will look quite slow, she stopped at 400m then took is easy for the following 400m, I am unsure about her other swims.
