I'm interested to know what sort of internet connection you all have? Broadband hasn't really reached the Channel Islands yet, and so I'm using dual channel (128k) ISDN.
What do you all use?

yeh i have one, used to have an ISDN but don't anymore for some reason, i don't think it was much better. i have a 56k but it only connects at 45333 at best, anyone know why or how i can get it to connect at the full 56k (56000) ??
You get 45K! You are lucky. The best I get is 33k. Most phone lines only cope with that. 56K is totally unheard of on a normal phone line.

I doubt we'll ever get broadband where I live - we're too rural for mains gas! Is it true that even when a telephone exchange is upgraded to ADSL, broadband only works in a 3 km radius of the exchange? My exchange is about 8 km away.

I have Cable Broadband running at 512k but I'm currently on a 1 month trial of their new 1 meg connection! :D
It is excellently fast!!!!!!!!
However, Chris, I am not sure what T1 and T3 mean (apart from them being very fast) or how you get them? Please can you explain?

T1 and T2 normally come in the form of a leased line between you and where ever it is you want to connect to (your ISP for example). They provide ridiculuous bandwidth and are pretty damned expensive for personal use. I entered a competition with Demon about 10 years ago, and the first prize was a leased line for a year -- value: thousands just for installation.
Universities and big companies usually have them. I've never heard of a residential house having one installed; although now you've got me thinking ...

Basic BT broadband at home, which I think is 512. Until recently I used a supposedly 56K connection which never seemed to get above the low 40s, but it was OK. The main benefit is freeing up the phone line. I did think I might download music once we got broadband, but I just can't find the time.

56K here  like landlubber we are far to rural..and ditto no mains gas... looked into satellite but cost is extortionate.. before we moved down here last August we had broadband and I miss it so much!!! on 56K manage to connect at about 46.6kbps.. but that only after I contacted BT and got them to tweak the line because the connection speed was so slow.

One of the NTL lost sheep.
Actually up until Christmas my 128k connection was driving me nuts -once had a 2 week stint with no connection. Since then it has been fine making my visits to the NTHell site a thing of the past.
I know I should really look around again at offers from BT, Tiscali, etc cos I'm paying £17.99 per month - anyone knowledgeable on the best offer going for full bb (say 512k min) now please?

Yes I believe Blueyonder offer 512k broadband for £17.99 a month now. Heard it on the radio the other day. Unfortunately they aren't available in all areas.
That reminds me I should speak to them as they are charging me £25 a month!

Broadband at work (512k), 56k at home, there's no broadband out in the wilderness yet. Normally I look at this site from work
