Scottish people have a definitive knack for their blunt observations of the obvious. I highly suggest, and I do hope a moderator sees this, that we stop questioning why I said what I said and revert to the trail of swimming on this thread

Back to swimming.
Not surprisingly, I nominate James Hickman. Yes I know he swims for this club, but the amount of his time which he is willing to spend with the younger kids, by turning up to hand out prizes and sign autographs for a few hours shows what an ambassador for the sport he is and also a good roll model.

28-05-2002, 09:13 AM
Yes, he was certainly trying to spend a lot of time with a handful of younger teenage girls known to me when he came up to Scotland for the recent GB Grand Prix Final.
Hats off to him for all the hard work he puts in in this respect, whether it be in the warm-up and swim down pool or showers.

Too true Rogant!!
Still, I guess he's a better role model than Mr. Foster, at least he's helping to keep those girls in question interested in the sport, no??

Fos has been adored by girl swimmers for many a year, no doubt extending their life in the sport in the process. Problem is though, that hardly any of them realise how slim their chances (zero) are with the guy.

Well you don't get many Kings dominating the 25m events unfortunately. Swimmers unable to step up will always be looked down upon by the masses, especially those cursed middle distance swimmers...
lane4
30-05-2002, 07:55 PM
That's because to be the king you have to suffer some pain whilst training hard and often. Queens can't cope with hard work so they like the 25's for which hard work is not necessary.

look, i'm sorry about that. it just goes to show that either 1) people can't read or 2) they're just being mean. don't worry about it or try to ignore it as much as you can.
also, i am an american too and as a new yorker, i've had to put up with a lot of nasty comments about how rude and cruel new yorkers are in general. after september 11th, this all changed, but look at our country. we are constantly criticizing other countries and stepping in where our business has no right being in and where we are not wanted. i mean, george bush with "the axis of evil???" has he been watching too many star wars movies? in other countries, i can understand how people might not like the usa. don't get me wrong, i love my home more than anything, i would die for it. i'm just saying that people of different countries might percieve us as different than we percieve ourselves, and vice versa.

There are other Americans who feel that we should not intervene in many places of conflict in the world, ie. Israel, Afghanistan, Iraq. But since becoming the superhegemon in 1945, we have had a tradition of promoting pro-democratic and often pro-American business ideals around the world, and anything short of that is considered oppressive. When we do not intervene (ie Rwanda 1994), we become chastized for not doing so. But in relevence to this BBS, the biggest problem is that if British people realize they are very similar to many Americans, they feel they are less European, and thus balance it out by 1/2 the time being pro-Europe, the other 1/2 pro-America. We have the same language, similar government style (though we place power on the Executive Branch where they do not) and similar culture.

I think that one of the main weaknesses of the people of the USA was that until Sept 11, they underestimated the meaning of terrorism and that they were loathe to condone it as they believed that this would never happen to themselves.
Since that day, they have had a greater understanding of the world in general, whereas before it was more a case of - if it does'nt affect me why worry.
Again this is a purely personal perspective.

If I were to nominate a "guy swimmer", it would be somebody who devoted their whole life to swimming outside the safety and comfort of a swimming pool. An example might be the German record swimmer Otto Kemmerich, who swam in 1927 from Westerland on the island of Heligoland to List on the island of Sylt. After a lifetime of personal open-water swimming records, he died in 1952 attempting another record trial in the North Sea at the age of 66.

Hmmmm, thinking about it, perhaps my bendy dolly range needs some revamping. I am considering including some liquid PVC so this can be injected into their bellies to reflect increasing waistlines when the subjects retire from swimming. Perhaps for longevity I also need to think about a pair of tweezers to pluck out temple hair for the guys.

Without a doubt, Lewis Gordon Pugh, the environmentalist who recently swam in the Arctic Ocean wearing only a pair of speedos. Apart from the fact that I agree with his concerns about our planet, I freely have the greatest respect for anyone who has the raw courage needed to perform such a feat. I, personally, am too much of a coward even to swim in open water in this country in winter, without a wetsuit, although there are many that do so, who have my admiration. This guy though, who last year swam the entire length of the river Thames, and who has swam in every ocean in the world, is just incredible!

Cesar Cielo is quite easy on the eyes and one to watch in the pool too. With his NCAA results a few months ago, he's a top contender in the 50 and 100 if he can master the LC racing. His 100 yard time converts to 47.4 in LCM!
