Well I know it's two years away - but that means it's already two years since the last games. I can hardly believe it has gone so fast!!
Anyway you can find some information regarding qualifying times for Athens here:
http://www.fina.org/Athens2004_swimming.html
A quick browse suggests the A times are pretty much the equivalent of the top 8 from Sydney, and three times (mens 100 free, womens 100 fly and 400 IM) are faster than the present British records!!:(

SO that means in those events, if Britain cannot get 2 people to make the A cut, they are allowed 1 who has made the B cut. I don't know why they make these qualifying times so quick. I mean Britain is a swimming power, so it would seem logical to set it on pace with that.

One thing to remember is that there is still over two years until the cut-off date for achieving these times. Of the 28 individual events, 15 British records were established in Sydney or since. This means that in another two years time, these events will have moved on further and others may see old marks wiped out. (Well, hopefully!). Of the remaining 13 times, 6 stand from the pre-Atlanta era. The times do seem quite harsh, but I think times in general are moving on so quickly at the moment that they won't appear quite as bad by 2004.:D

I've only checked a couple, but I think they equate roughly to the 10th placed time in semi-finals (or heats if no semis), give or take a couple of hundredths

Yeah could be that, or rankings (which after all will be largely based on times swum in Sydney). Whatever the case, are they too hard? Too easy? Indifferent? I feel a poll coming on...

To qualify for the British team for Athens a swimmer will have to achieve a top 12 world ranked time (based on 2 swimmers per nation) using the end of year (2003) world rankings lists as published by FINA, at the ASFGB selection trials which will be held from 24 April-1 May 2004 in Sheffield (venue TBC). Naturally they will have to fulfill the FINA criteria as well.

I just had a look at the qulaifying times and it looks to me that Stephanie Proud, at the age of 13, is only half a second off the A time for 200 backstroke! That's pretty impressive!

NSS, the US Olympic Trials qualifying time is not the same as the Olympic Qualifying time, it is slower. Because of the depth of American swimming, USS has made the presumption that we will always have swimmers qualify for every event at the Olympics. They set the Trials cut faster than the Sr. Nationals cut, but it is slower than the Athens cut. This is to prevent the biggest meet of US Swimming from becoming tooo big.

o yes, of course it is. but becuz of the depth of usa swimming, the trials cut is quite fast. i just thought it a wonderful achievement of julia to be so close to the trials cut. no offense to any other nations out there, but i believe the usa trials cut is faster than any other nation's olympic trials cuts with the exception of australia. again, no offense intended.
