OK. It's the beautiful Kaci's (http://www.swimclub.co.uk/forum/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=295) driving test tomorrow (6th June) so I'd like you all to use this thread to wish her the best of luck.

She doesn't need luck however as she was taught by one of the best ....... me :D

Good luck Casey (her real name don't you know!!!)

I think she'll need a lot more good luck messages than that given her teacher!!

How many times did you take yours again C?!!?

Anyway KC, all the best drivers fail once!! (that's my story & I'm sticking to it!!)

I agree Aussibabe!

Good luck Kaci, you'll be fine.:(

Thanks everyone for the 'good luck' messages!

Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough because of ONE stupid reversing around a corner even though I had done it perfectly in that spot half an hour before the test.

I only had 9 points (15 max is a pass) although 6 of those were because I didn't use my mirrors enough. So I would have passed no problem.

I now have a 3 week wait till the next test!

You did much better than me then!

Don't worry I'm sure you'll pass easily next time, especially if you change instructor before then...:p

Or examiner!!

Bazza
09-06-2002, 11:37 AM
Yes that also could help. Mind you I'd be surprised if they have more than one examiner on an island that size!:p

Maybe Chris is the other one??

They definately have 2 examiners (or did back in the day anyway!!), but you're only allowed 3 times with each or something (Chris knows more as his limit was drawing near!!). Irrelevant for KC of course!!
I seem to remember KC is related to one of them though so that might narrow that option down a bit!!

I don't know whether this means anything to you Kaci, because I assume from your username you're in Australia, but a boy at my school, when taking his driving test for the first time got something like 4 majors (none are allowed) and 29 minors!!!!! (Only 15 are allowed!) Don't think you did too badly!!!!!

Bazza

I got 5 major faults on my first test, and 17 minor. Second test I got 3 minor.

What do you driving tests (both Britain & Australia) entail? Ours is drive around the block, parallel park return to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, and if you had less than 20 points deducted or made it without crashing into some object of some sort object (car, tree, cat, lemonade stand, etc) you passed, pending eye exam.

Bazza

You have to carry out three manouvres (can't remember all of them but they include parallel park, reverse round a corner, turn in road - previously known as 3pt turn - things like that). Apart from that you just drive around for about 35 minutes I think it is, and if you don't collect any major faults or more than 15 minor ones you pass. Eye test consists of being able to read a number plate from a set distance. If you get three minor points in any one category then it equals a major fault. Examiner took action = immediate fail!

In Guernsey you have to do 2 out of 3 manouvres (so either 3 point turn, parallel park or reverse around a corner). Then you can have up to 15 faults, but you can also get an automatic fail e.g by not looking in your mirrors enough. Then you get asked questions but there is no written exam

Oh yeah forgot to mention the theory test - it's not really written as such, they have touch sensitive monitors which you answer your questions on. You need 30/35 to pass (~85%), with most questions being multiple choice 1 from 4. I remembered one of the other manouvres, which is just a plain old reverse park (into parking space). I'm sure there were more though...

Kaci wanted me to let you all know she has passed on the second attemp with only 6 points. She would have typed this herself but she is out causing havoc on Guernsey's roads. :D

HOw old do you have to be to drive in the UK?

Bazza
02-07-2002, 09:20 AM
17, or 16 for a 'moped' (that's a really small motorbike for you guys!). They tend to get overtaken by milkfloats though!

Chris

In Guernsey you have to be 14 to drove a moped (50cc), 16 to drive a 125cc motorbike or scooter and 17 to drive a car.

Yes, we have mopeds here too. But what about driving a car?

What else do you want to know?

Quote from DVLA web page,

"In general, the minimum ages for driving on British roads are 16 years for invalid carriages and mopeds, 17 years for agricultural or forestry tractors, small vehicles and motorcycles, and 21 years for medium/large sized vehicles, minibuses and buses."

A full list is available at http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/vehicle_cat_desc.htm

That should cover it - except for the Channel Islands, Isle of Man & Northern Ireland (I assume)

:D

Thank you. I only asked Steve because Chris started out his response with "In Guernsey" which refers to the Channel Islands. I do not know if there is a universal policy throughout the kingdom on driving age, because there is not one in the United States. It ranges from 15 in South Carolina to I believe 18 in some places for driving a car. (I could get mine at 16 in Rhode Island, not that I think you know where Rhode Island is on the map).

Hmmm, now let me see.

North East of Washington on the East coast heading up towards the cold end of your country. Is that the one you meant?

We do study Geography at school in UK. ;)
So how many tests did it take everyone to pass. It took me 3; 1) The examiner lost his glasses on the EMERGENCY STOP. 2) My instuctors car had no MOT. 3) Passed despite not having to reverse round a corner (examiner forgot to include it! PHEW because I was bad at that)

Not bragging but I passed first time. My examiner said to me after the exam, "I am not happy about doing this but I am going to pass you". What was that about? I told him if he wasn't happy with it then he didn't have to do it. I wasn't making him. What was the psychology behind that? Thought I'd be too cocky cos I'd passed first time? Not my nature. Does anyone have any friends who are driving examiners? Do they have a personality? :p

Think I mentioned this before but I passed second time. Aparently the best drivers all do! (yeah right - that's just something people say to someone who fails!!!)

Stella: The guy who lives opposite me is a driving instructor. You know the type who take bookings for 10 lessons in advance then never show up, and as a result get irate fathers bashing his door down demanding a refund! But why is it always at 12pm when you have to be up for swimming the next morning?!?!
