What do you think is the greatest Irish record of all, Junior/Senior/Men/Women/Relay??

Here's a link.

So who really knows all about Michelle, obviously no one here (and don't tread in it either)?

I opened this thread thinking it was going to be 'most pints of guiness downed in a minute' or something like that.

Agreed, but it's an absolute disgrace that she is allowed to keep any records at all.

Based on the state of the urine sample that got her banned, you could argue that Michelle Smith wins that one too.

(Okay, someone had to say it)

As always it depends on how one looks at the criteria. I would agree with my esteemed friend Mr 2-MPS that Andy Bree is the swimmer who's nearest world class (whatever that means) in terms of achievement at highest level. Also he's the second great Ardsman to have swum breaststroke.

On the other hand I'm sure there was a view that David Wilkie's 200m from Montreal in 76 (?) was one of the greatest records (obviously not Irish!). This illustrates the principle that JL once mentioned to me "Its not how fast you actually go, its how long it lasted". Now I think we were talking swimming records that night.

So, using this principle, whilst no longer recorded in the Irish record books there was a 100m free of 53.3 (manual time) that the great Andy Hunter set back in 71/72 I guess. That stood for years. Similarly the equally great Ian Corry on breaststroke(National Age Group Champ at 12yrs, Commonwealth Games 1972 etc.) Aye it were great then!

I have no constructive comment to add regarding Michelle Smith, although I recall a tremendous feeling of pride when she won, a feeling that all those years ago the pyramid was being built to eventually deliver Irish success on the world stage and then the most awful feeling of total betrayal of all thats good about sport and our nation.

Ken Turner's LC 1500m record of 16.08 stood since the 80's until was broken by the 1st Irishman to go sub 16 LC. Even though Andy was only 16 at the time & in my humble opinion his 15:51 @ Junior Europeans this year is the best record in terms of achievement followed by Andy Bree's 2:13 LC breast & Barry Murphy's 22.65 50 free.

As for Relays its the 4 x 50m f/s SC

1:32.65 by my own club in 95 still stands, as does the
4 x 100 by the same Coolmine Team of 3:25.47, the national team record is only 1.12s faster
