FRANCIS FORCED TO BOW OUT OF THE COMMONWEALTHS
Twenty-year-old Robin Francis, selected to swim for England in next week's Commonwealth Games in Manchester, has been forced to withdraw from Team England.
After consultation with his doctor, the Bath swimmer has been diagnosed as suffering from fatigue and will be unable to compete in the Games.
The England Swim Team, currently at their training camp at Loughborough University in preparation for the Games, will arrive in Manchester on 25th July.
The above is from the ASA website. Will this mean a recall for Caroline Smart? Either way it's a shame because Robin has had a great season and looks a very promising swimmer.

Indeed, a big shame for my old pal Robin.
He was complaining of fatigue after the Oz camp held before the Commonwealth Trials and has not seemed to have been 100% ever since this.
Interestingly I know of others who have complained of excess fatigue following this camp. Maybe this is a case of Sweetenham's volume ethic going one step too far (especially as Robin has not got a background of high volume training) and perhaps the powers that be only have themselves to blame for the withdrawal of one of their hottest properties?

Of course regular viewers of the pullbuoy log will have seen this story ages ago...:D  ;)
But back to the point..Big shame for Robin :( who would have been a medal contender (but probably not gold), but maybe better in the long term for his swimming career - there are worse meets to miss (Olympics anybody?). I can't see anyone being called up to replace him at this late stage however.

I would suggest that IF that camp was the original cause of this then it wasn't too much total volume but rather too much volume at a high intensity within the total volume.

Sorry Steve - internet access at a premuim just at the moment. And the reason I mentioned Caroline is because I heard she was due to go, but then the diving team got an extra place at the expense of the swimming team and she was last in and hence first out. Just what I heard...:p

You're right - I hadn't noticed that - Caroline Smart was in the nominations following the trials, but was not selected by the Commonwealth games council for England. Seems a bit harsh. I suppose that if she has been training fully in the interim it may be worth calling her up, however, I still can't see it actually happening.

Yeah you're right. I don't know for sure but she has probably gone on holiday or something. It would be an ideal time to take a short break.
