This could be really interesting. Thorpe looks quite good, Welsh has a point to prove but doesn't seem to be swimming well at all, and the Brits could put some pressure on.
Incidentally - it was suggested that Riley Janes hit the bottom of the pool off the start, but to my knowledge it's 3m deep, so surely it wouldn't be possible unless something was drastically wrong?

welsh had better win this one, considering how he was robbed of a certain gold medal in the 200.

According to Lane4 he caught his back on the track that the 'halibut' camera on the bottom of the pool uses, and cut it quite badly. The track has now been mved further from the start end of the pool, which is I think only 2m deep.

Robbed?? I think it was fair, they must have had evidence if the appeal was rejected. A pity for Welsh though.

well according to don talbot and several officials who looked at the footage over and over again and also looked over the rule book many times, it was legal. i really don't want to get into an argument about it though.
however, i'm just glad matt won this one as he certainly deserved to. thorpe swam well also...but he has enough gold medals already.

Matt Welsh did a brilliant 100 back. It was good to see him bounce back so well after the disappointment of the 200.

Am I right in thinking Welsh was dq'd at the Pan Pacs as well? If that's right, was it for the start again?

According to SWimnews he was disqualified for travelling more than 15m underwater in the heats.

Yeah, it was the 15m rule. Blatent as well!! He went 15 1/2 - 16m underwater!! The team didn't even appeal. He said he had a great start off the wall and wanted to capitalise on that, but just pushed it too hard. It was for the 100m this time and he did a great 200m after it - just 9 100ths outside his best.

sounds to me that hes out to get advantages over other people by any means possible, im not saying hes a cheat, but hes trying to get away with it too many times...some swimmers are like that

I wouldn't say its deliberate. You're rarely going to get away with that kind of infraction anyway. I just think Matt had the adrenaline pumping and was just a little reckless. The field was much tougher in Japan with Peirsol, the fastest in the world this year and a couple others capable of going sub 55. Although there's no excuse to be that careless, especially in a semi-final. He rebounded with a gritty 200 though and he bested his commonwealth time (54.72) with 54.52 lead off for the relay.

Yeah a while back James Hickman was dq'd on backstroke... can't remember what competition it was but I remember someone saying he'd worked really hard to work out the exact number of kicks he could do underwater on backstroke so as not to get dq'd, but then it went wrong on the day. These things happen, it's just unlucky that, for some1 as experienced as Welsh, it's happened twice in a short space of time.
