I hate freestyle kicking sets at the worst of times cos I've never been that good at it. The thing that puts me off the most is these awful pains in my hips. I don't know what is the underlying cause and they only happen when I do freestyle kicking sets. It gets so bad even after just 25m that I can't continue much further. I usually force myself to finish the set but by then the pain is really really bad. Please someone tell me that it's not just that I'm useless and that something else is affecting me.

I've always had a few problems with my hips like when you stand and lean on one side for say 5-10 mins after that I have bad pains in that hip!

The pain is like a really really bad ache or something...getting towards a cramping pain. I'm sure it's not normal, freestyle kick shouldn't cause me this much pain should it? No-one else seems to get this much pain when they kick, why me! HELP!:(

Sometimes kicking without a kickboard helps. Also if you are someone who does a lot of running or other sport on hard surfaces your muscles become hard and tight. Swimming requires loose muscles.

thanx for your help, someone else suggested that to me about the sports, i have been playing hockey and netball regularly for 5 years now, possibly affecting my leg muscles. Can you suggest anything for me to do to help loosen my muscles?

If you do not loosen your muscles up b4 u enter the pool you may experience sore hips so about 5 mins of light calinsthentics or however u spell it should work for you

Basic streching routines will help. Some work with Theraband or stretch cords will help.

Dreama, is it possible that you are carying an injury that you are not aware of. I broke my back when I was 17 and it manifests itself as a pain in my hip (apparently it is quite common for pain to be present in the next joint down because of the extra work it is doing. ie pain in the ankle from injury in the knee). I am not trying to suggest that it is anything like this but perhaps it is worth checking it out if you have any doubts.
Have you considered going to a sports injury clinic? You should be able to find out where your nearest one is in the yellow pages. They not only deal with injuries caused by sports but also injuries that affect your sport.
You don't say how you carry out your freestyle kick sets but if you are kicking mainly on your front, you could try kicking on your side instead, I find that helps.

it's possible as I've always had a hip problem, like leaning on one side for a while when I'm standing up leaves me in pain...and they click like mad when I'm walking too! annoying! I'll try and find out what it is because its affected me for such a long time, I've never complained before because I thought I couldnt kick because i was just useless but now I'm older I've started to realise that I have pain that other people don't get. Also kicking on my side does help a bit, but after all this time weak kicking, my legs still aren't really strong enough to complete the sets

Good luck Dreama. It's always best to get anything you are worried about checked out.
