Sub-minute man?!
So I've been doing some research...
I want to know who the first man ever to break the minute was for 100m Breaststroke? I did manage to find out that in February 1995 four people did, it, but in which order I do not know. The four were: Fred Deburghgraeve (this is who I've always believed was first) Mark Warnecke Phil Rogers Alexander Dzhaburiya Dzhaburiya springs to mind as the man who held an unofficila world record for several years in the 50m event. I think it was about five years. FINA never ratified his swim, although finally Ed Moses came along and beat his time to save some on the controversy. Something to do with him swimming it at a meet which didn't meet the standards in the regulations for a WR to be ratified blah blah blah. Warnecke was the fastest 50 man LC and SC for several years in the late 90's, again pretty much until Moses. He was also very fast over 100, but only in the SC pool. Deburghgraeve won the Atlanta Olympics, and alongside Becue probably easily the highest profile Belgian swimmer of all time, he held both 100m WRs for a while. Rogers I'm not so clued up on with him being from outside Europe, but I do know he's been around a long time, and that he was always up there at the major international meets. I also found out that a surprising (to me anyway!) 39 people have broken the minute in the subsequent seven years, including our very own Gibson and Mew in recent times. So to cut a long story, well not quite as long, does anyone know the man who made history?? |
Bazza man!
I presume you're talking short course 100 Breast here? If so surely you aren't too young to remember our very own Adrian Moorhouse breaking the 60 second barrier for the first time back in 1989 in Bonn? The man to do it long course much more recently was of course Roman Sloudnov. Glad to have been of help. |
the USS website has a progression of the world records from when they were first set to the current record holder. However, because the US does not focus on SCM, the progressions are only in LCM and SCY. Click here and at the link click on event all time ranking to see this resource (even if it excludes SCM)

SwimUSA - thanks thats the kind of thing I was looking for - used to be something similar on the FINA site, but not anymore.
Rogant - thanks for answering the question, sorry for being so ignorant. Swimnews only went back as far as 1994 I think, and I was sure it was Deburghgraeve. Then again, I'm certainly too young to remember '89 - probably couldn't even do breaststroke in thos days!!:o |
Barrie, I am disappointed in you not knowing that it was Moorhouse and thinking it was Freddie.
:copper: |
Sorry mister 4, SIR!:o :(

Who will be the first under 2:00.00 for the 200??
Looks like Moses more and more. |
Well seeing as he's the fastest by some 3 seconds, I'd suggest that's likely. He's easily the best br around at the moment - he holds 3 of the 6 records I believe, and one of them has stood since Barcelona, so...:king:

To drop to 1:59 from 2:03 will be a very big ask for Moses and he rarely competes SCM so its even less likely for quite a while yet I reckon.
First women under 4:00 for the 400 free or sub 60 for the long course 100 back are better questions to ask at the moment I think? Or when will Hackett (or some other swimmer) first break 14:00 for the 1500? Now that would be silly! |
sub-minute man
Adrian Moorhouse was the first man to swim under the minute for 100m Breast Stroke. At the Arena Meet(Short Course) in Bonn, Feb. 8th 1987, Adrian went 59.75 for a new World Record(SC). First man under the minute Long Course was, I think, Roman Sloudnov who went 59.94 in the 2001 World Champs. I believe that Sloudnov had gone under the minute in the Russian Championships earlier in the year but there was some problem with ratification.

Ok 1987, got it wrong by a couple of years - but then I suppose you should know better than anybody else ;)

Sub minute man
You were close Rogant stard. 1989 was the year Adrian Moorhouse broke the World Record Long Course with 1-01.49 at the European Champs - also in Bonn. He equalled the record twice more in 1990 at Commonwealth Games in Aukland and in 1991 at the ASA Nationals in Crystal Palace. Interestingly, considering our present wealth of great Breast Stoke swimmers, England went 1.2 and 3 in the in the 100 Breast in Aukland. Moorhouse 1-01.49; James Parrack 1-03.15 and Nick Gillingham 1-03.16. So there is a challenge for our men this year.

They could do it - Adam Whitehead's running back into some form after a lean spell, and there aren't many names who instantly spring to mind from elsewhere. Mens breaststroke is one of Australia's weakest areas - although they do have Jim Piper. Is Phil Rogers still swimming?
