Acts as a personal pace coach that elevates training and maximises performance. It is quickly becoming the standard training tool used by coaches to improve athletes abilities.
Small electronic device that transmits an audible beep to help develop stroke consistancy, helps distinguish between optimal training and race paces. That is the definition according to www.bournesports.com |

I got one because my 8 y.o. had developed this really annoying habit of recovering 'oh so slowly' on his breathing strokes. In just one session of using it he got into a really consistent rhythm. His coach was threatening him with poolside dancing lessons so he was pretty happy with the result.
You can set it anywhere from .01 secs. to about 10.00 secs so you can set rhythms for whole stokes or set it faster for bits of strokes - my favourite is setting it for a consistent fly kick. I'd prefer a waterproof MP3 but the only one I've seen is £99 so I'm happy to make do with 'beeps' for now.

Or you can get an AquaPacer/Solo designed by Hannah Miley's dad (a coach in our swimteam
) which does the same job only better...!The Aquapacer and the Solo are other great tools that you can use to work on tempo swim training. The Aquapacer is a two piece coach-controlled model with a wide variety of settings that includes a handheld controller and a remote beeper that clips to a goggle strap. The Solo is a single user unit that clips on a goggle strap. It can be programmed split times, stroke rates, rest intervals, and repeat count. Here's an example: If you take 25 strokes when swimming 50 meters, you are getting 2 meters/stroke. If your rate is 2 seconds/stroke, 50 meters will take you 50 seconds. Increase your tempo to 1.75 seconds/stroke and your time drops to 43.75 seconds for 50 meters. With practice and the help of someone observing you during races, you can determine what stroke rates work for you in various situations. The tempo you maintain for a given set of repeats versus a race will not always be identical, but you can do sets at race tempo once you learn what that race tempo is. Conversely, you can work on learning to swim at a faster tempo, then transfer that to a race. |

I have both gadgets. They are good tools for swimming at set stroke rates. I have been using mine to try to raise my moribund stroke rate.
The "tempo trainer" works fine and is very simple to set up, as you only set the time between beeps. It only works under a swim hat, tucked up near your temple. The goggle strap attachment is useless, as I found out. It will dislodge as soon as you do a fast turn or push off. Luckily I found the thing floating in the lane. The "aquapacer - solo" I also have. This is more complex. You can set up the program before you swim. A set like 10 by 100m swum at 35 spm can be programed in but don't forget to set up each rest interval between 100's or the damn thing will be beeping constantly. I don't know how you can get the aquapacer now. I found one of the last ones for sale last year. Swim companies like 'Swim-Tec', mailsports, etc said that they could not get any stock. The person in charge would not make them available to any dealers and the website for aquapacer vanished, so you could not order them direct ! ??? What has happened with " aquapacer" how could i get one now ?? |

The company that made these (or we think it s the company in question, was disolved on 6 August 2010. If anyone can still help me find one of these devices, it would be ideal for me. Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with the aquapacer - I got one and the buttons were very dodgy, which meant I almost spent more time programming the next set into it than I did swimming it! Tempo Trainers seem to still be readily available, e.g. http://www.swimshop.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=TEMPO You program it by time interval rather than stroke rate, so what I did was I created myself a table in Excel, printed it out, and laminated it to have on the poolside, so I could easily set it to e.g. 26 strokes per minute.
