Aberdeen City Council "transform" sport services
http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/acci/...ort_210208.asp
Aberdeen City Council will make budgetary savings by permanently closing the Bon Accord Baths which were "temporarily" closed at the end of last year, closing the ice-rink for 18 - 20 months, reducing early morning swimming facilities etc. Staff at the various centres will also be subject to council pruning. However a new 'grant stream' will be set up and individuals or groups will be able to bid for help with transport to other venues....... Last edited by broomhillsaved; 22-02-2008 at 06:19 PM. |

This is just one article out of many covering the closure of Bon Accord and cutbacks or closures of other pools in the city. The Bon Accord Baths had both swimming and diving facilities and was described by Aberdeen City Council on its website as one of the most popular swimming pools in Aberdeen (right up to yesterday 21st Feb 2008) |

Aberdeen City Council website
Bon Accord Baths and Leisure Centre is one of the most popular swimming pools in Aberdeen. Construction of the art deco building commenced in 1936 and was completed a few months into World War II. The maple wood lined facility comprises a forty yard pool with diving boards, relaxing Health Suite, fully equipped fitness studio, aerobics studio, cafe and vending machines.
Aberdeen City Aquatics Programme also offers structured learn to swim classes for children and adults at Bon Accord Baths. The programme follows the 'Bank of Scotland' National Learn to Swim Syllabus supported by the National Governing Body for Swimming in Scotland. |

After the Sports Service Transformation Report - 21st Feb 2008
BON ACCORD BATHS
The City Council has taken the decision that it can no longer afford to subsidise the operation of the Bon Accord Baths. The pool is currently closed to the public. The full facility will close on 31 March, 2008. The level of subsidy required to operate the facility is £842,000 per year, which is well beyond that of other similar facilities across the UK. Every visit to the baths is subsidised to the tune of £11 by taxpayers. Bon Accord Baths is not fit for purpose. It requires expensive equipment in order to shorten the 37-metre pool to 25 metres to host galas, for which the replacement cost is about £100,000. Fire regulations mean that half the spectator area is unusable. The sheer scale of repairs and maintenance at the 68-year-old building has resulted in numerous and lengthy closures over recent years. |

Aberdeen City have long employed a dedicated and hard-working SDO through whom I had the opportunity to gain most of my qualifications (ha ha at the chance of having ever got them through the Shire) and she is extremely knowledgable and helpful. They also employ Swimming Co-Ordinators around the City, supporting a large number of well motivated and able swimming teachers who were/are? kept up to date with continuous professional development on a regular basis. Not only that but staff are well paid compared to their counterparts in the Shire. They run an excellent programme that was written by them. On the competitive side, they also employ and part fund a Head Coach and Assistant Coaches for the city-wide team COAST with the individual Clubs in the team. The work force as well as the Clubs must be very concerned about the future, as are we all.

I am very sad to hear about the proposed closure of Bon Accord Baths. It's my favourite pool.
I learned to swim there, I trained twice a day there when I was at school and a few years later I worked there too. It is such a magnificent building, check out these pics: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/...ad.php?t=26921 I no longer live in Aberdeen but always look forward to lunchtime training sessions when I visit. I was totally shocked at how under used the pool was. Surely something can be done. I have signed this petition and hope others will follow: http://www.petitiononline.com/deep1/

Have signed. The Bon Accord Baths had the only diving boards in Aberdeen, apparently.
