With Adlington improving so much in the 200 fc, our relay prospects suddenly look much brighter! Now if we can get one or two of the 1.59's down to a mid-1.58 then we'll really be in the mix!

Thought I'd go through and work out all the freestyle relay teams. The medley relay teams are worked out differently and don't have times to meet:
Mens 4 x 100 free no team Womens 4 x 100 free Caitlin Mcclatchey, Francesca Halsall, Julia Beckett, Jessica Sylvester Mens 4 x 200 free Ross Davenport, Robert Renwick, David Carry, Andrew Hunter, Benjamin Hockin Womens 4 x 200 free Rebecca Adlington, Caitlin Mcclatchey, Joanne Jackson, Melanie Marshall, Francesca Halsall So regarding Woodward's point about the free leg of the medley relay, Hockin is on the team for the 200 free relay, and hence it could be possible to use him for the free leg of the medley relay as well as Ross.

Goddard quandry
Anyone looked at the current Beijing programme? The men's200m Backstroke is in the same session as the 200m IM. Which one will he do, surely he can't do both as there is only the one event (women's 200 Breaststroke) in between. Do-able for heats but tough for semi finals, there's only a medal ceremony, two finals and a semi final between them. At the final there is only one final and a medal ceremony although I'm not sure the programme has been totally confirmed yet. This could be managed at National level but not at Olympic. If he dropped the backstroke which on total time from a prospective medal would be the one to drop would Marco then go in that as he got the time in the heats. Euan Dale and Joe Robuck didn't swim the final but got the A time in the heats of the medley. Goddard says he's a big stage swimmer which undoubtedly he is, can he maintain form for both. Phelps can do it he's a phenomenon though.
What's your thoughts. JT

Has anybody compared these results to the Europeans and come out with a 'cyber' medal tally?

I'll take that challenge. Using heat times only (as these were swum in the evening and given the selection policy it seems reasonable to assume everyone was trying to swim as fast as they can!):
Gold Liam Tancock 200m IM Kate Haywood 100m Breast Jemma Lowe 100m Fly Rebecca Adlington 800m Free Hannah Miley 400m IM Rebecca Adlington 200m Free Silver Jemma Lowe 200m Fly Matt Clay 100m Back (question mark Tancock) Gemma Spofforth 100m Back Hannah Miley 200m IM Gregor Tait 200m Back Francesca Halsall 100m Fly Gemma Spofforth 200m Back Caitlin McClatchey 200m Free THomas Haffield 400m IM Bronze James Goddard 200m IM Rebecca Adlington 400m Free James Gibson 100m Breast Keri-Anne Payne 200m IM Ross Davenport 200m Free Kirsty Balfour 100m Breast Throw in a gold in the womens medley relay, silver in the womens 4x200 free relay and you get a total of 7 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze plus potential medals from Tancock, Balfour and Davies (who won silver in Eindhoven). Pretty good?

Bazza, with the full crop of 200m swimmers for the women's relay GB probably would have won Gold and broken the WR.
The Beijing schedule is certainly one of the more poorly planned programmes in recent Olympics. These two events are the same conflict for Ryan Lochte. He's the WR Holder in one and second behind Phelps in the other. As for Goddard it would be best if he just focused on one. The 200 back has been his bread and butter however you may be right that he's closer to a medal position in the 200IM. Overlooked him. At least it's one more option. |

Well done Bazza. If This were the case, it would have been a tremendous achievement.
By the way, is it just me, or does anyone else feel absolutely exhausted after the trials? |

The ending of the trials was great. During the B finals I understand that the BOA met and approved the nominated swimmers. As a result all the selected swimmers got their team shirts, and paraded onto poolside to a standing ovation to receive their formal selection letters. Before the parade it also showed all the British, European, Commonwealth and World records that had been beaten - there were loads!
The parade started with the swimmers walking between the spectators (much to their delight) along the balcony and then down the back stairs to appear one by one to have their events read out. The officials and volunteers lined the pool in a kind of guard of honour. The ladies paraded past my side of the pool (Omega suite side) with the men the other side. You could see the excitment on the faces of some of the swimmers, whilst others appeared to still seemed to be trying to take it all in. Not surprising really as the last of the finals were completed less than an hour previously. Good luck to all of them. I certainly hope that this week's experiences are the beginning of fantastic memories that will last a lifetime for each and every one of them.

It was a compelling and thrilling week, I'm sure you'll agree...and I want to banish the words "false dawn" from my head. I'm hoping, like we all are, for a great conversion rate this time - if we do I'll be taking the throat lozenges at regular intervals.
BTW I know a lot of you have been critical of the lack of tv coverage of the Trials...hopefully the World Short Course will partly make up for that.. Hopefully after Beijing things will be better from a television point of view...and with any luck the World Champs trials will be back on the BBC. Bob B |

I don't suppose anyone has video of the parade which could be put up somewhere like Youtube? Would love to see it.
Can anyone imagine this sort of thing happening if Sweetenham had still been in charge? |

I can, because it's an Aussie idea (and a good one). Not to say they would have done it of course....

Irish - I hope Marco is proud of his achievements, he may not have made the team this time, but he swam some storming races and was absolutely brilliant to watch!!
If he continues to train well and apply himself as he has recently, I'm sure his time will come.
