Topten, i have a mate who is probably as annoying as you.

Showed up at swimming last night after not training for over a year and immediately starting swimming times completely alien to me.

I was behind him and and his last 100 rep was the same as my PB. Bloody show off!

Don't knock yerself - your times look pretty damn good from where i'm sitting.

I'm coming to believe that, in swimming at least, there's no substitute for having started young and developed good technique over many years.

...not that i'm anywhere near giving up of course!

If i'm sub-1:30 for 100 Free before I hit 50, it'll all have been worthwhile!

And it's not just the actual swimming. Learning to dive and tumbleturn in your late 50s is not as easy. It's not something that is practised enough in my lane as the others all started young and developed the skills then.

If the youngsters are practising off the blocks, I watch and listen to the coach. My dive is coming along but I still reckon I lose up to a second against the others. As for my turn, at least another second maybe more. Crack that and my 50 free would be down to 32s.

I've got the same problem as I only recently learnt to tumble and dive. Most people watching me at galas have said if I could just sort out the dive and turn it would knock time off. Generally after a dive I am behind in my heat.

I think doing more galas is definitely helping though, you gain the experience and feel for it more in a race situation.

How was the starts and turns thing you did at Loughborough, MJC?

I think its more the conditioning than the technique. But it is possible to catch a lot of them, just the ones with talent have brutal pace that is definately just about impossible to catch up with.

I think you would need the mega hours per week, mega gala's when you body is young and able.

If i could do silly hours per week to catch up now i would. Body is too old.

Once its in there its in there. If i took a year off now i would probably be so slow its untrue. He takes a year out and was still 10 secs per average faster than me apart from the last 100 when he was 20.

I hope he comes training more because he inspires me,makes me try harder and is very encouraging. Makes a difference.

Its was very good, but for someone like me I think I need individual direction, it gave me some good pointers on breaststroke turns (apart from the two hands bit!)

when i was at chalfont otters, my first club i was awful at starts and turns. they make a big difference in a race, but yeah 20hours of training soon sorted that out.
and stevie-k its all relitive, theres always going to be someone faster than you, just like irish's son was always faster than me, but i had my own goals and aims. we cant all be number 1.
havent trained for a week now due to the snow, quite annoying, depending on the weather tonight i might have a bash.
eating healthily hasnt started yet though
