Where are you hiding now?

A massive blizzard dubbed "Snowmageddon" by president Barack Obama is causing chaos in the eastern US, with parts of the region buried under more than 20in of snow.

It’s the heaviest snowfall in the American capital since records began, with 2.5ft or more predicted. Parts of Maryland and West Virginia are already buried under more than 20in.

Those who believed in global warming...Where are you hiding now?

It's an El Nino year, so the east coast of the US is getting the colder and wetter that's typical under that scenario while on the west coast of North America, Vancouver has been so relatively warm and dry that they're going to have to make and truck in massive amounts of snow for some Winter Olympic events.

If you don't understand that it is all part of climate change, I suggest you study more.

Either that or get ajob at a children's play park, and study the swings and roundabouts.

Juicy - I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is a world of difference between weather and climate. Weather is what happens day-to-day and climate is weather averaged out over decades. Cold winters like the current one are merely noise on the long-term trend, which in terms of global temperatures, is relentlessly upward.

The current freakish cold is, as Selkie points out, partly down to El Nino or to be more accurate, the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This is teleconnected to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and partly responsible for the current negative NAO which tends to cause colder North European winters. However there are warm anomalies in the stratosphere over the North Pole which have disrupted the Polar Vortex and caused it to shift. This is thought to be responsible for the unusually stubbornly blocked conditions we have had since early December. High pressure to our north and east has caused persistent cold easterly flows resisting our usual mild SW winds from the Atlantic. Ironically this synoptic situation in summer would result in a blistering heatwave.
