I wasn't trying to speculate (I actually think it's a bit distasteful to speculate on the cause of death at this point), but was instead just trying to clarify the statement made by a previous poster. I've seen no suggestion of an underlying medical condition mentioned in any of the news reports and wondered where that suggestion had come from.

UAE medical said that it was a heart attack somewhere in the 18 different insulting press releases they've sent out since the race.

Sorry I've just posted this topic in the competitive open water swimming forum, without looking in here first.

I don't think he would need to have an underlying medical condition to succumb to fatal heat exhaustion - at 30 degrees, that water was warmer than UK recreational pools and under sustained, high level exhaustion, you wouldn't need to be "weak" to die from heatstroke. In fact the higher-level competitors would be more likely to suffer due to the sustained efforts they put in, which lower-level competitors would not be achieving.
