Thanks folks

Still improving and can just about conduct conversations with strangers while shopping etc. I still find it a little bit difficult make to myself intelligable but I find most people patient. I'm still somewhat weak but again my strength should improve.

I still have my Wirral accent!

Pete, sorry I didn't see this earlier as real life has been keeping me off forums.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the heads-up - I haven't seen a copy!

Lady from Speech Threrapy thinks that I've made so much progress that I don't really need any therapy as such but she'll monitor me. My grammar has been affected so she asked me for a copy of a magazine article (Vintage Radio) I wrote before I had my stroke. She then asked me to write a new article on the same sort of subject, so she'll be able to identify any problems with my ability to spell, construct sentences and basically visualise language.

Lady from the Stroke Association is giving me plenty of help.

Something I have to watch is the way I leave out words, or even parts of sentences. I form sentences in my mind, but somehow I don't "see" the all characters laid out unless I have to double check.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to take part in any cold water events over the holiday - I missed the last (2010) Liverpool Boxing Day dip because I was deliberately let down by someone who had promised me a lift (expenses paid) but I found he had no intention.

I'm spending Christmas in Shrewsbury with my sister but I won't be let anywhere the Severn - I did swim there in Boxing Day in (I think) '08. Now tiles and chlorine for the foreseeable future - as I did this afternoon. Seems a stroke will leave you with fatigue for quite a while as well. Don't know how this will affect my cold-acclimatisation.

I was allowed to swim indoors just a few days after my discharge from hospital in late Nov, however I've now been given the green light to resume full bare-skin winter swimming, with effect from now.

I should swim with someone keeping a eye on me from the bank, or at least nearby.

So out with that heap of s****te 2011, and in with Happy New Year.

Hi Wildie,

I was getting a bit worried about you not having shown up anywhere. Good to hear you're OK.

I'm looking forward to my festive swim tomorrow.

My stroke damaged the part of my brain responsible for communication - I totally lost speech with my hearing and vision impaired. This post was made just three months after my stroke, and my recovery was described as "astonishing". Apparently my brain had suffered much less damage than expected, which with my quick recovery has been put down to regular exposure to extremely cold water.

Unfortunately although my engineering/science (and my research) survived intact, my language skills are at primary school level and my debating skills have gone.
