Talent 2012
Looking at the conditions for the L 2&3 programmes (pool) - printed in the Youths Official Programme 2012 - I thought they were so much fairer than before - views?
IMV, there is less room for discretion to be exercised, making the position more transparent - for both l 2&3. L3 times will be much tougher for younger swimmers to achieve, but I think the balance is fair. Most swimmers achieving those time will be Internationals, and if the swimming bosses decide that they wish to concentrate their money on such swimmers, I think that is fair. One of the things I love about the L 2 is that using Rankings positions to select swimmers has now been formalised. This clearly means that swimmers who don't go to Nationals can be selected, although in practice, if a swimmer is high up enough in the Rankings to be selected, their time would have probably been an NQT. There can always be the exception I suppose, but also, if a swimmer who qualifies has to miss Nationals for any reason, they are not necessarily penalised, apart from missing the opportunity to swim at a meet where most swimmers pb. I have always advocated that too much reliance is placed on being at the Nationals, and as qualifying for these champs is by a process which in my view, is unfair, I saw the whole talent programme as flawed. The new conditions go a long way towards addressing my previous concerns, and I just had to acknowledge this - publicly. Although this is not the right forum, good luck to all swimmers yet to compete nationally this season. |

Does anybody know how the following is worked out :-
1.5 The top 3 male and female long course ranked swimmers from each region born in each of the above years (1.2.1 and 1.2.2) will be selected. Where an identified swimmer has already been selected through 1.5, the next eligible swimmer of the same gender will be selected. In the situation of a tie in ranking then times will be ranked via SwimNews International Point Score. Does this mean that the best times for all events for a swimmer over the period are converted to points and then accumulated to find the top 3 ?

So, best Form, Distance, Sprint and IM?
Seems odd that it isn't specified how the top 3 are worked out, it can't be based on a single individual event and surely not all events where the swimmer has a ranking? |

Yes, I can't see how else it'll be done, unless I'm missing something.
