Oggy oggy oggy
Do they still do the oggy oggy oggy chants at meets? Being out of the kids' swimming world , and out of the country, I'm out of touch with current trends. I tried to explain the "oggy oggy oggy" phenomen to some Spaniards but they looked at me blankly and as if I were mad (This from a nationality who yell Olé at every opportunity).

used to do it at my old club about 15 years ago when I was 9 or so, haven't heard it since, but it was good fun as a kid!

Still happens at meets we go to which always leads me to believe there hasn't been much imagination employed - Oggy and "we are the mighty 'whatevers' (insert as appropriate)". Great fun for the kids, I'm sure, but after the time of the 30-something-th hearing within several hours at a stuffy pool, from a parental perspective it does get a wee bit tedious....
(Sorry, am obviously in a grump today )

Wales still use it at the WISE match, haven't heard it too much away from there....but then maybe I've blanked it out, my therapist said I do that with traumatic events

A couple of Welsh teams generally come to the Barracudas Open and we hear it at various times throughout the weekend. We don't mind it - in fact, we rather enjoy the fun atmosphere the teams help to create.

Our club did it at our own open meet thingy a couple of years back with a HUGE team - 60 people or so, as I remember. The referee threatened to throw us out, right up to the final warning, for cheering too loudly as it may affect the swimmers in the water
surely this is the whole point of cheering for your team mates, to drive them on. As far as I can see, encouraging your swimmers is a form of affecting them and it is all part of the atmosphere of a highly competitive gala where two rival clubs were close on points. By the way, we lost. I blame the ban on our chant Any similar experiences or was the referee just particularly grouchy?Besides, another club did the same after us without being told to keep shtum! |

God yes! And just imagine if you came from Stratford on Avon or Newcastle-Under-Lyme. You would have to just chant a few letters, wait for the race to start and continue from where you left off.

No swimmers from Wales did the "give us a..." chant then!

We used to sing Simon and Garfunkel records at the back of the coach on the way to and from gala's - am I old?

You mean somebody didn't take along an tinny cassette player with recordings of the previous Sunday's radio 1 chart show?
Singing along to Ultravox to be interrupted by Tony Blackburn. Oh those were the days....
