Swimming at Scarborough
Hi all.
Are there any pointers concerning swimming in the sea at Scarborough? E.g. are there organised lifeguards? Are there problems with currents etc? Does the sea have a slight parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme flavour?

I have never swum in Scarborough, but I have swum up the coast at Whitby where it is patrolled by lifeguards. Better than that though is swimming in Runswick Bay even further up the coast.

A few years ago, I went for a swim in the sea at Scarborough, at the north end of the bay where Atlantis water park and Corner Cafe used to be. The biggest hazzard was in the form of rocks in the sea: indeed, after a most enjoyable swim upon leaving the sea I 'succeeded' in finding one such rock the hard way, by tripping over it and cutting my leg open! Fortunately, the local lifeguards did a superb job in cleaning and covering the wound with plaster. I understand that Scarborough is popular with surfers and bodyboarders as well as swimmers, despite such obstacles.
I have never swum at Whitby or Runswick Bay, but would like to as I imagine both places offer fine swimming. I have bodyboarded further north, at Saltburn. Last edited by Dave_G; 19-07-2012 at 11:24 AM. |

I was in Scarborough last weekend i swam at North bay the lifeguard service had finished for the end of the season but the signs say it operates from easter to the end of september. we also swam in the sea at Bridlington a couple of weeks ago again there are two beaches there a south one and a north one both very nice and both have lifeguards easter to end of sept.
we were surprised lat week at the water temp it seemed quite warm we managed an hour without a wetsuit as it was quite sunny we topped up the tan for an hour, the breeze was coming off the land so lay on the sand by the sea wall was quite pleasant for the first weekend in October. |

The sea is actually fairly warm this time of year. The main 'discomfort' I've found is getting changed in the cold air afterwards!

I've only just noticed these last few answers.
It was quite cold. I think it felt sub-15C.

Probably colder than normal this year due to the wonderful ''summer'' we have enjoyed.

I have also swam in the sea at Bridlington, both north bay (near the fair) and south bay, and quite agree with your comments On one occasion, I was swimming in the sea off south bay, whilst a friend was sunbathing on the beach (he claimed it was too cold for swimming, although, to be fair, it was only early May; yet I was in the sea for quite a while, and I am older than him too!). What I found amusing was that the incoming tide gradually got nearer and nearer to him. Unfortunately, he noticed and retreated towards the promenade! lol. However, a secondary problem arose: it started to rain, followed by a thunderstorm! Whilst I was fine in the sea, he was only wearing tshirt and shorts, and somewhat exposed!
