Smile Two months to go to The Ecover Blue Mile 2012, Plymouth

The Ecover Blue Mile - Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th September 2012

This year, Plymouth’s waterfront will welcome the Ecover Blue Mile participants and their families with a full 2 day programme of watersports, music, seafood and science activity designed to connect everyone with our blue environment. Registration is now open and you can swim, kayak and/or stand up paddle the mile (www.thebluemile.org).

For the participants, the watersports programme kicks off the weekend with the open water swim starting from the historic Mayflower Steps. If you’ve signed up for the kayaking and stand up paddle boarding, then these events are in the afternoon and will follow the Corporate Team Challenge and the new AquaTriathlon - a continuous open water swim, stand up paddle and kayak over a 3 mile course. If you don’t fancy getting wet, you can walk a mile raising funds for WWF’s work to protect our rivers and seas.

On the shore side, for families and spectators, hang out in the thriving Barbican district and soak up the sun, music and street entertainment. Make sure you taste some of the sustainable seafood dishes at the Boathouse Cafe and visit the street traders and educational exhibits in the event village.

Every participant that takes part in the Ecover Blue Mile this year will be given one complimentary ticket to experience the amazing National Marine Aquarium, home to one of Europe’s deepest reef and shark tanks. They will also be able to take a boat tour with Plymouth Boat Trips to visit some of the historical places that are tucked away on Plymouth’s amazing waterfront.

All participants are guaranteed an amazing day of sport, music, seafood and the opportunity to feel great doing something to help our environment. Remember that the Ecover Blue Mile is a fundraising event for our official charity, WWF-UK and we would encourage everyone who enjoys the day to make a donation to WWF in support of their work to keep our rivers and oceans healthy for everyone.

Also, within the Blue Mile Event Village will be exhibits of interest to the whole family all themed around sport, healthy living and the environment.

Sign up: Deadline for entry is midday 31st August. The entry fee for the one mile swim is £35, half mile swim £25, kayak/stand up paddleboard £40 and for the individual Aquatriathlon £55. There will also be a race for Corporate teams. Limited entrants. Registration and further details are at www.thebluemile.org
