Save Ransomes Sports and Social Club, Ipswich Suffolk

On February 21st 2012 Ipswich Borough Council voted (on the closed agenda)to serve a Notice to Quit on Ransomes Sports and Social Club which has approx 11 acres of football and cricket pitches. This "secret" proposal to evict the current management of Ransomes came to light just before the local elections when the "not for publication" document was leaked to the Ipswich Spy website.

The club have started a petition here:
http://www.ransomesssc.co.uk/

The Council claim that the Club will still remain a sports club but the general fear expressed is that the pitches will fairly rapidly be designated for housing.

Signed! Knowing how politicians work, it would never surprise me if this were a 'done deal'!

Thank you for signing David; the story broke on Ipswich Spy a short while before May 3rd and sparked a flurry of leafleting in the area around the Sports Club.

This post on 26th April was the first of several on this topic.

I bet the ruling party would rather this hadn't come to public notice until AFTER the elections, if at all!

It did cause quite a furore especially as the seat in question was marginal ( a mix of Labour and Conservative Councillors currently representing it).

The club has been run by volunteers for the last 18 years promoting football, cricket and other sports for all ages, so the council's sudden desire to take control has sparked fears that Ransomes Sports and Social Club will meet the same fate as Bader Close Club ie staked out for council housing.

As far as I know the Notice to Quit has not yet been served but the resolution voting for it was passed on February 21st 2012

There is useful information here on the protection of playing fields:
http://www.sportengland.org/faciliti...ng_fields.aspx

Just a pity that it seems so toothless: Private Eye's regular feature on levelling the playing fields testifies to the continued erosion of these irreplaceable facilities.

Please support the Ransomes petition so that the sports pitches there are not "ransomed off" for housing development.

We certainly do! And our swimming pools and lidos! Unfortunately, add politicians and money talks. The irony is that this sort of thing is still happening in the year we are hosting one of the most important events in the sporting calendar, namely the Olympics! It is all very well providing facilities for the elite, but 'ordinary' people should NOT be deprived of sporting opportunities.

The "Notice to Quit" has apparently not been served yet according to information given on June 13th 2012 at the North East Area Committee meeting in Ipswich so we shall what transpires from all this.

Perhaps I'm cynical, but my guess is that those behind this despicable action are waiting for the fury to die down, and an opportunity to 'bury' the news of the closure behind other bad news, or at a time when few people are likely to notice.

Notice to Quit was served on 19th July 2012 with an initial possession date near the end of January 2013; this has not yet happened.

See latest Ipswich Spy article here:
