Leeds International Pool

I never swam there long enough to really know it that well, but I am sure some of you will remember it and have fond memories...hope it doesn't make too many people cry.

Now really is the end of an era...the demolition of Leeds International Pool (taken from Malc's facebook).

Diving boards too - a thing of the past for many pools.

The ceiling pattern - still showing, that was an awful thing to look up at and try to swim straight when doing backstroke.

I drove past the other day en-route to the new pool. It was quite strange to see half the outer shell gone, and be able to see right inside to the destruction. Certainly a sad end of an era. Why couldn't they have just done it up?!

I remember it well but my poor swims at Leeds were not connected to swimming into lane ropes.

The answer to that, alas, is simple: money! There is no profit to be made for some suit on the council in restoring a pool or other public facility. On the other hand, there is a great deal of money to be made in allowing the demolition and redevelopment of such locations, even if local residents are strongly opposed to what replaces the pool: it's money that talks, not public opinion.

Because you didn't find a pool, or because you ended up having to walk the streets of Leeds?

The new 50m (John Charles) isn't in the centre but it is near the motorway, you should have asked!

I remember swimming at the Old Leeds pool so often. My Missus was on the Hall of Fame board in the Entrance Hall. She was the first name on the list!!!

I swam a few Leeds' Marathons there and went under 20 mins for 1500 once.
And my first LC 100 free under 60!!

I broke 2 European records at the GB's there as well in 50 and 100 breaststroke.

The ceiling pattern never affected me, backstroke is not something I do ......

Watched Russia v. GB Ladies water polo once and knew more of the Russian Girls than the Brits after my recent trip to Moscow in 1992 I think it was.....

Loved that place...so many memories!!!

Never been there but I suppose it would be like knocking down Crystal Palace. Too many memories there for me.
