International Society of Swimming Coaching Certification

The CISSS is a critical and unique factor in displaying competence and level of expertise in the area of swimming. As such, the CISSS credential will undoubtedly obtain admiration and respect of high regard within the profession.

What does CISSS stand for?
Certified International Society Swimming Specialist.

Who should enroll in the CISSS?
· Exercise Physiologists
· Fitness Professionals
· Personal Trainers
· Strength and Conditioning Professionals
· Swimming Coaches

Do I have to be a member of the ISOSC to take the CISSS Exam?
Yes. It is mandatory that you are an ISOSC member in order to maintain your CISSS credential.

Why should you earn the CISSS?

It is critical for the swimming coach who work with athletes or active individuals to have a fundamental understanding of the adaptive response to exercise and the role that training plays in the acute and chronic response to exercise. Swimming Coaching and training are intimately related. You can not provide good information on one aspect without knowing the other. Swimming Coaching is its own unique field that requires academic and real-world specialization and training.

Is the CISSC exam and assessment recognized?
The CISSS is new, just like ISOSC. ISOSC hopes that leaders of applied exercise science and swimming coaching become informed and recognize the certification. The CISSC has been coordinated by professionals, health educators and researchers. An online course is provided with assessment. The CISSS is solely responsible for making sure that his or her practice of swimming coaching is within any state or Federal guidelines.

What are the requirements to be eligible to take the CISSS course and examination?
You have a 3- 4 year undergraduate degree in exercise science, kinesiology, physical education, or related health science.

What if you have a 3- 4year degree in an unrelated field?
If you have a 3- 4year degree in an unrelated field (e.g. psychology, sociology, liberal arts, etc), then it is highly recommended that you take and pass a semester long college/university level course in exercise science or related class.

Can I still take the CISSS examination even if I do not meet the initial requirements?

Alternatively, if you meet ALL of the requirements below (and do not have a 3-4year degree), you can take the CISSS exam. The individual must be practicing in the field for at least five years and be a member of The ISOSC.
The individual must at least be accredited as a high level swimming coach by his/her countries national governing body.

Are there any state-by-state regulations regarding Swimming Coaching?
You are responsible for seeking information to answer this question. The purpose of the CISSS is to demonstrate the highest threshold level of knowledge in the field of swimming coaching. There are currently no individuals with the CISSS throughout world.
