Smile Test your outdoor swimming

Mencap has launched the third Mencap Mile. This is a great event for all the family. You simply swim a mile of Dorney Lake either on your own or as part of a team.

So come and join us on 30 September at a world class Olympic venue. Register at www.mencap.org.uk/mencapmile and raise money for a great cause.

I am considering entering this one. Can anyone advise me whether the venue is accessible by public transport?

I suggest you google Dorney Lake for the definitive answer but I'm sure there isn't any public transport that would get you within a couple of miles of the place. Whilst owned by Eton College its nowhere near Eton.

Looks like Burnham station (Slough) is nearest so unless you can catch a local bus you might need to get a taxi. Looks to be only a couple of miles. On the way you could admire one of the local highlights - Slough's sewage works.

I've been on lorry runs to Windsor and surrounding areas - avoid London like the plague. Any rail routes through London cost a bomb. There is a more direct route to Slough from the north avoiding London and if you can buy an Advance ticket you should be able to get there for a few quid - even less if you've got a Railcard.

Thanks, Pete. I look forward to admiring the sight, and no doubt the er, 'perfume' of Slough's sewage works! lol

The problem is that travelling to Slough from Rugby via London is the most logical and direct route. The alternative, via Reading, involves doubling back to Coventry and 2 changes! However, I can get a cheap fare from Rugby to london on London Midland, if I book in advance, and hopefully London to Slough won't be too dear for a cheap day return. I shall look it up on internet.
