Summer 2012 (?)

The last few summers have in general been very poor. However, so far, apart from the odd week at the end of May, this Summer is absolutely DIRE! May was one of the coldest on record, and this month has been the wettest June since 1860! I gather the reason for this is that (yet again) the jet stream is too far south. However, why is this year so much worse? Has anyone any thoughts? So much for global warming!

i blame Cameron and Clegg. It's not fair that the weather in Athens is so nice when their having financial strife.

Seriously, I wonder if there’s some kind of cycle every 100 or so years

Well, I did mention a year or two ago that the sun seems to be entering a period of low activity - a Grand Minimum. Just look over the past five years when summers have become increasingly cold and wet. There has been a underlying shift in wind patterns in the North Atlantic with blocking anticyclones persisting around Greenland forcing the polar jet to the south of the UK, rather than its usual summer position between Greenland and Scotland.

Seems like this side of the Atlantic has ended up with most of the global warming with temperatures running ahead of where they usually are for the year.
