The bad side of it is I've got to wear my wetsuit. I haven't time now to prove to them that I can cope in water between 14 and 17C without one. Still, I've not done more than 2 hours so perhaps it's not that bad.
I'm doing this one too....sans rubber, so I'm hoping for an Indian summer. It isn't a race, so I might take a camera with me and get some shots from amongst the swimmers, but if it is "cool", I may have to go at a pace to keep warm..

...and my car has started making some alarming noises, which the garage thinks is the dual mass flywheel....and that is a major repair job amd mega £s... anybody else driving to Devon next weekend, passing Hampshire??

Louise says the water temp is 14.5C at the moment and may drop a bit when it rains between now and next Sunday. No problem for you, Fitz.
I can't help on the car front, as I'm now travelling from the other direction!

I have entered the Dart swim this Sunday. This will be my first open water event ever - and since it is not a race, I thought it would be a good way to break myself into it. However, I will be without wetsuit, and I was kind of hoping the temperature would be closer to the 16C end of the initially predicted 14-16C ...oh well, I guess this will be a true baptism of fire!

Helen, I'm intrigued, if you've never done any OW events, how did you get them to let you do it non-wetsuit? Did you do a 2-3 hour qulifying swim in 14C? I want to do it non-wetsuit but didn't want to do the qualifier so near to the swim because I've never swum 10k before.

KB, although I have not competed in any events, I have done training down at Dover harbour, and in the lake at Little Marlow. I did my test swim at Little Marlow on Sunday (2hrs 43mins), but the consent form does not stipulate that the test swim must be in 14C water, it simply states open water for 2.5-3hrs (unfortunately Little Marlow was certainly warmer than 14C as many places still are). I did swim in 14C water at the start of the season at Dover, and hope my ice-baths have maintained my cold acclimatisation.
Saying this though, I have still not had my consent form authorised and returned, so could still be turned down (all a bit too last-minute for my liking, since I do not possess a wetsuit)!

Thanks Helen. I'm not questioning your capabilities, you understand, just wondering if I should have gone ahead and tried it without, but I don't feel confident enough! I'm happy for 2 hours at 15C with not even a shiver and have done my channel relay qualifier under the watchful eye of e-fitz, but I don't know how much longer than that I could manage. I hope it goes well for you. See you Sunday! I'll be the one looking like an aged power ranger. (My wetsuit has bright blue legs!) Come and say hello.

PS If they do turn you down....which they shouldn't....I have a spare wetsuit. Don't know what size you are but let me know if you need it. Fingers crossed for you that it won't be necessary!

Anyone swam in the Watermead Country Park in Leicester? Says that the average temperature in July is 12 degrees.

Helen, feel free to borrow KB's spare wetsuit, but only if you're, erm, "statuesque" - our KB's not a short-arse, at a very elegant 6ft tall!

It's too short for me, GF, or I'd make a point of saying I'm somewhat...ahem... Amazonian!

I was actually thinking last night about maybe hiring a wetsuit given that most of my recent OW experiences have been at warmer temperatures. It's a difficult choice - having never swum in one before I'm sure it'd feel somewhat odd, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and do really want to last the distance. I guess I need to make a decision pretty soon though. And thanks for the offer KB, - would it fit a "short-arse" 5'6"-5'7" size 10-12?! ...

5'7" isn't short-arse, Helen. This wetsuit supposedly fits 5'8" to 6' and size 12-14 but has just been worn by my son's 18 year old girl friend who is 5'7" and a size 10. She was very comfortable in it. It says large but it was the tightest, most uncomfortable thing I have ever worn. I couldn't even lift my head to spot. I'll bring it along and you can try it.
I'll find a piccy of my son's GF in it from last week and add it later on. You may be able to tell from her build whether or not it will fit you.

Seems a tad on the cold side to me, but Brick can probably advise you on this, as it is his area, so to speak. I believe he swims/has swum there regularly.

Thanks, it does seem cold, especially as the temperature in the lake I am using at the moment is around 16. Or is it "cold up north"?
