Thank you to the people who read my earlier post and made suggestions. I participated in the Crossing of Lake Annecy in France on August 15. I hope to return to Europe next year and try another event.

Well, now that summer's finished (did it actually start???) it's time to start listing the serious cold-water events. Please post any details of events in your area - including the various Christmas/New Year swims.

Well, if Summer did start this year, I must have blinked, because I seem to have missed it!

Maybe if we're lucky we won't get a winter either.

Padstow Open Water Swim

I understand that several seaside resorts, including Bournemouth, Weymouth, and Torquay hold official swims during the summer and, when I was on holiday last August, in Newquay, Cornwall, I paid a visit to Padstow, where I saw a poster advertising an open water swim between Padstow and Roche. Does anyone know anything about this latter event, or any similar swims?

Yeah. The Padstow swim is usually held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and it's a swim across the River Camel estuary from Padstow to Rock (Roche is about 15 miles away, inland!). They insist that you raise (or donate) at least 25 quid, so I haven't bothered to do this one so far. My local Open Water event is the Yacht Inn Swim from Newlyn Green to the Jubilee Slip in Penzance (circa 1300m). This takes place around the same time (late August), and costs a fiver to enter for which you get a T-shirt, and a good apres-swim atmos in the Yacht Inn.

There's a link to some pics of last years event on this page, under the "events" button:
(i'm in there somewhere )

Tentatively, there is a new year's day swim in King Lear's Lake, Watermead Park, Leicestershire, at 11am on New Year's Day. I don't know for sure if we have permission, and you may have to join the triathlon club, which costs £15. But there was one last year.

Hi All

I will be visiting England from New Zealand in July this year, based in and around my home town of Harlow, Essex.

I'll be quite pressed for time but would love to do some open water swimming while I'm there, if there was an event on somewhere reasonably local that would be even better. I wasn't a swimmer when I lived in England but now do a lot of pool and open water swimming, so I'd like to add some English experiences.

If anyone can point me in the direction of event calendars, local masters groups, etc that would be great.

Thanks

Liz D

Possible Guildford River Swim

HI All,

Its not finalised yet, but I have had some very productive discussions with the River Wey Navigations Management ie the National Trust who are very "pro" an inaugural 2-2.5Km swim on 5th July as part of Guildford's festival week. There has been a raft race for years but I found some friendly contacts who have surprised me by their keenness to adopt this idea.

There will be a lot to do by way of sorting logistics, but I'd like to think we could see a number of swimclubbers who do the South Coast sea swims coming along.

Please PM me if you're up for it.

There should be an open water swim in Norwich in July run by the east region ASA, there are as yet no details on their website. www.eastswimming.org

The BLDSA hold a quite a few open water competitions each year, and every swim in one of the ones organised by the BLDSA (rather than an affiliated club) is counted in a Grand Prix competition. Each swimmer gets a point per mile of the swim (no points if you don't finish), plus additional points if you're placed in the top 10.

I'm toying with the idea of entering some of these competitions as a bit of fun and perhaps useful training. They're scattered all over the country. Is anyone else interested:
