I did do until I saw how much. £8 registration, £5 a go, and in my case another tenner or so for the return rail journey.

Doesn't look as though they allow independent swimmers either and there's no way I'm joining a club. Salford Leisure didn't even have the common courtesy to reply to my email enquiry.

It only costs me £3.50 bus fare to get the real thing at New Brighton.

Every year the price goes up by a lot more than inflation. Its either more staff on the boats for H & S, cost of insurance or they are getting greedier every year. Take your pick.

According to the RALSA website, on 27th September a 3 km swim is being held from Southend pier. As all you boys and girls know, Southend is in Essex, near the Thames estuary, and has the longest pier in Britain, if not the world. Anybody brave/insane enough to have a go?

I will see what I can find out. Do you have any further details on this event in Burnham on Sea? Like you, idea of swimming out to an island intrigues me.

Lee Swim, Great North Swim and Sandycove Challenge all added to list at top of thread. Still waiting to find out about this year's London Great Swim.

Edit: Brownsea entries closed. Details here:

http://www.rlss-poole.org.uk/

although they do mention a "reserve list" should somebody drop out.
