The Open-Water Temperature Thread
I've got another temperature reading yesterday, and am likely to get some more today. It might make sense to have a separate thread for water temperature readings so that they can be revised all at one go.
Anyhow, by leaving my aquarium thermometer floating at the edge of King Lear's lake for a bit on Friday 6th April 2007, the result was 12C. I invite WildSwimmer to invoke his moderation powers to: make this thread sticky, just leave it, or delete it, depending on what he thinks. |

You beat me to that comment!
River Biam, 13C or thereabouts. Brick the younger insisted on measuring it himself a second time then claimed it was 12C. Last edited by Brick; 07-04-2007 at 04:52 PM. |

Today - Easter Sunday.
Hatchmere Lake 13.8C. And that's 20' deep in the middle. Surface and 1m temp. readings identical. No thermocline within my depth (about 5') so the water is warming evenly to at least that depth. Wildswimmer Pete

River Soar in Abbey Park, this afternoon approximately 4:30pm. 13C.
I'm probably over-doing it measuring the rivers this frequently. |

9.5C Brighton Beach (not the nudist part) @Low tide today @ Noon.
Hundreds (well low hundreds then) basking on beach or promenading (as posh people say) near the Grand Pier were treated to one proper eejit swimming a set of 14-15 130m in about 35 mins before the cold started to have an effect. Could probably have toughed it out a bit longer but as was only swimmer and the onlooking English Language school may not have graduated to understanding simple requests for help, I thought it better to get out under own steam. Sea almost mirror calm, but really would appreciate a bit of accelerated localised global warming for next time. For any of ye "poolies" sneaking a peak at this thread, I thoroughly recommend it!! I need a swim-buddy....any locals down there? Otherwise the Guildford 3 (or even more) may descend upon the novelty rock emporium and more.

River Weaver this afternoon 15.1C on the (accurate) digital thermometer, 16C on the pool thermometer both surface and 1m depth. Split the difference: 15.5C or the magic 60F.
Downside: at this water temperature it's not COLD-training, which basically involves immersion for as long as possible with just enough swimming to keep afloat. Now it's normal SWIM-training, and I did about 500m in 30 minutes......against the current. Boy am I out of practice.....every joint's aching. ![]() Wildswimmer Pete

River Lin @ about 2pm today. 15C on my aquarium thermometer left in the water for a while. Further up near the Bradgate Park car park there are a number of good sized pools behind some weirs. All with the expected "no swimming" signs of course.
A kid had caught some fish, and they turned out to be Stone Loaches. Among British freshwater fish they are possibly the No. 1. indicator of good water quality. We advised the kid to put the fish back quickly, as they are so sensitive to pollution and oxygen levels that they die quickly in jars. We have some pictures of the park, but this page has a better one. http://www.bbc.co.uk/leicester/conte...iver_360.shtml Last edited by Brick; 11-04-2007 at 06:35 PM. |

Anyone new to OW swimming should give weirs a wide berth unless they are definitely declared safe by experienced local swimmers. Looking at the BBC pic I'd say the Lin looks to be swimmable at that location. Wildswimmer Pete

The weirs make the river look a lot bigger than it is. There isn't a lot of water going over the weirs. A little lower down I managed to easily jump from one bank of the river to the other. And at that point the river was only a few inches deep. I could be wrong, and I want to know if I could be wrong about this, but I can't imagine the currents near to the weirs to be that strong.
There's a bend in the river a bit later on where I hope to use a snorkel and mask to observe the wildlife. People there feed the fish, and today I saw what might be Roach and Chub (too similar, but the biggest ones are a bit big for Roach), Perch (tiny) and a single Gudgeon. We've seen brown trout there. But I'd need to sort of kneel on the river bottom and crouch forward to get my face in the water. No chance of swimming there. Last edited by Brick; 11-04-2007 at 08:08 PM. |

River Weaver, Frodsham, today. Surface temp using digital thermo: 15.2C. Deep water measured with spirit s/pool thermo: Surface 16C, 1m depth: 16C
No discernable thermocline (well you don't usually find one in a river - too much turbulent flow) Wildswimmer Pete
